The Gospel Presented ~ John the Baptist Steps Aside

The Sign of Moses ~ John 3:10-15

Copper Springs Church ~ November 12, 2017

→ Introduction

We ended our study with verse 9 where Nicodemus states: “How can this be?”

In our passage today, → Jesus continues to present simple yet deep and profound spiritual truth to Nicodemus…

Prayer…

→ I    The Weak State of Spiritual Understanding    vv. 10-12

  1. → “…the teacher of Israel…”            vs. 10

The religious leaders were especially guilty of this. → In Matthew 23:23 Jesus says: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.”

  1. → Jesus Speaks With Authority            vs. 11-12

→ II    The Son of Man                    vs. 13-14

→ Son of Man is Jesus’ favorite title for Himself. Jesus is recorded as referring to Himself in this way more than 80 times in the Gospels.

→ When combined with verse 14, we a vivid picture of the nature of Christ. Jesus Christ is God who descended from heaven to take on human flesh for the express purpose of giving Himself to suffering and death for the atonement and salvation of Man.

→ III    Foreshadowing Crucifixion and Exultation    vv. 14-15

  1. The Sign of Moses: vs. 14/Numbers 21:4-9
    1. → The Situation in Numbers 21 - Numbers 21:4-9
      1. → Unexpected detour…  vs. 4
      2. → People speak out – rebel…  vs. 5
      3. → God sends fiery snakes – most likely cobras…  vs. 6
      4. → Repentance – Plea  vs. 7
      5. → Provision  vs. 8
      6. → Faith=Life  vs. 9

  1. → Jesus Lifted Up    vs. 15
    1. → I see two key words here:
      1. Hupsoō (Gk.) – Lit. to lift up – … I would have you turn to → Philippians 2:5-11
      2. → Pisteuō (Gk.) – Lit. to believe or entrust –

→ Conclusion

As I prepared for the message this week → four questions kept coming back into my mind:

→ When was the last time you engaged in God talk with someone outside of your family and friends?

→ When was the last time you shared the Gospel with someone?

→ When was the last time you invited someone to church?

→ When was the last time you brought someone to church?
